Our Korean Collection comprises 210 items and only a minority of these can be considered of early origin. A considerable number of items belonging to the field of applied arts or folk art were created partly in the early 20th century and partly in the 1950s. The pieces of earlier origin come from the Far Eastern collections of Ferenc Hopp, founder of the Museum and directors Zoltán Felvinczi Takácsand Dr Tibor Horváth. A 19th-century six-storied stone pagoda in the garden of the Museum also evokes the memory of Ferenc Hopp. The Collection contains items belonging to the fields of metal art, ceramics, furniture, lacquerware and textiles, along with various types of paintings. Architectural ceramics are represented by several fragments of lock tiles from the 8th–9th centuries. The two valuable pieces of celadons from the – Goryeo era were manufactured in the 11th and 13th centuries respectively. Metallurgy is represented by a number of – Goryeo ( 12th–13th-century) bronze pots, incense holders, bronze mirrors and finely curved spoons (spoons with swallow-tail shaped handles). Good quality pieces of furniture are two hope chests decorated with metal mounts, two small low tables with drawers and a number of smaller cases with drawers. The art of lacquerware is represented by six new reddish-brown and black lacquer boxes and trays inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The collection of textiles includes mainly traditional Korean costumes however, we are also in possession of six older fragments of silk embroidery. An outstanding item of Buddhist painting is a pantheistic 19th-century representation of the Trinity of Blazing Star-Buddhas in the company of the Celestial Assembly; lastly, there are several landscapes and depictions of animals, plants and insects, too. Our Collection preserves the made-to-scale reproductions of the murals of the famous Anak Tomb No. 3 (Tongsu's Tomb, Goguryeo period, 357 AD), as well as the model of the tomb.
